Teenagers are usually vulnerable to having difficulty sleeping and often spent the night with the internet or playing computer games. According to the study, teenagers who sleep less are more likely affected by mental illness.
Based on the results of these studies teenagers who sleep less than 5 hours each night it will have three times more likely to experience mental illness than people who sleep 8-9 hours every night.
Teenagers and young adults aged between 17 to 24 years should have time to sleep an average of 8 or 9 hours per night. But this number tends to decline as many teenagers who would rather spend his time in front of electronic devices such as computers, video games and television in the bedroom.
Researchers from the George Institute for Global Health in Sydney, Australia, analyzed the sleep habits of nearly 20,000 people aged 17 to 24 years.
From that study, researchers found more than half of participants who slept less than six hours per night, have higher levels of psychological distress compared with participants who slept eight hours per night.
“Over the last few decades, adolescents and young adults tend to have increasingly less time sleeping,” said Professor Nick Glozier, who led the study.
According to Prof. Glozier, decreased sleep time was likely caused by the electronic devices, such as computers and televisions in their rooms.
“They sleep better tonight but still have to go to school or college at the same time, so they certainly have less sleep. And lack of sleep can potentially have serious effects,” added Prof Glozier.
Prof. Glozier explains, the real impact of sleep deprivation in adolescents is anxiety and body clock problems, which in a long time can cause bipolar disorder or major depression.
