Mentall IllnessThere are people who have a high level of creativity and ideas that were unthinkable by others. But people like this are often suspected of suffering from mental illness by their friends. So now we want to talk about is there a relationship of creativity with mental illness?

Recent studies show the brain gives the same response to chemical dopamine in patients with schizophrenia and also the people who are very creative.

The results showed the similarities between people who are very creative and with schizophrenia. These findings indicate that high creative people who may not be able to filter information in his head like a normal person, so the creative people more able to make connections to create unique ideas.

“Thinking outside the box (think as usual) probably because it has a box that is less complete or incomplete,” said Fredrik Ullen researchers from Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden.

The study found that the creative skills more commonly found in people who have mental illness in his family history. People like this are also associated with higher risk of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Some studies also found a link between creative ability and the dopamine system in the brain, the neural network that was formed to respond to dopamine. However, the mechanisms of the relationship of dopamine and creativity remain largely a mystery.

Ullen and his colleagues provide psychological tests on 14 participants with no history of mental illness in his family. This test is designed to measure creativity by asking participants to find different solutions to solve a problem.

Apparently, a participant who does this job well and is very creative has a density of dopamine receptors in the brain or known by the D2 receptor is lower. D2 receptors located in the thalamus region.

“It is known that people with schizophrenia also have a low density of D2 in the brain thalamus. This suggests a link between mental illness with creativity,” said Ullen.

Thalamus of the brain has a function as central relay (re-broadcasting), filter information before it reaches the cortex and is responsible for cognition and reasoning abilities.
