4 Concrete Ways To Avoid Hair Loss

hair lossOnly 1 in 4 men will start to have hair loss in Australia. So your chances are pretty good. Most men that fall prey to hair loss do so because of genetic conditions, and there is little that can be done to stop that, although of course it can be slowed down.

All of us will gradually lose hair, and short of dying young, there is little that can be done to avoid that eventuality.

Modern day hair transplant therapy is very effective for those who wish to solve larger balding issues, or for those who just wish to fix up their hairline. But what are some of the ways that we can avoid hair loss

  • Live healthy. This goes without saying. Living healthy, eating properly and sleeping right with good exercise will do more for you than leaving you with a full head of hair for a longer time, you will feel better and look younger. Regular checks with your doctor for your overall health are important. Sometimes hair loss may be due to something else.
  • Medicines and some products. Male pattern baldness, also known by its uglier and scarier clinical name Androgenetic Alopecia, is caused by some really funky chemistry on your scalp. It starts with testosterone, the male sex hormone. Harmless on its own, testosterone gets converted to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) when in contact with oil glands in the hair follicles. These glands hold the enzyme Type II 5-alpha reductase, which interacts with testosterone. DHT, in turn, gets in your scalp follicles and shrinks them. Simultaneously, it makes the protective membrane of the scalp thicken, restricting blood flow. This makes further hair growth impossible. The hairs fall out at a natural rate, but aren’t replaced.

That is the basics. Many substances, often found in nature, have shown to block the action of 5-alpha reductase, blocking DHT production. Things like zinc, pro-vitamin B5, saw palmetto, and ginkgo biloba are increasingly used in quality men’s products to keep hair young and healthy. All men can use these to help is at least slowing down baldness if they are genetically prone. Obviously there are a lot of scams out there, and seeking a professional or physician is a must.

  • Massage. It sounds simple but massaging your scalp can be one of the best ways to avoid hair loss, and should be a part of your normal shampoo regime. It is easy for us to forget about the blood circulation to the very top of our heads, especially when we are focusing on our hair. Massaging increases blood flow, so important for strong and healthy hair growth. Massaging is not scratching.
  • General care. Hair dryers, very hot water, hair bleaches, dyes, minimising styling products, wearing a hat in the sun, and washing your head daily will have a great impact. Neglecting your hair, even because of a fear of it falling out may not be the solution. The skin and the follicles on your head are quite sensitive and yet it is one of the areas we treat out bodies the harshest – other than our hands and feet!

Why wait until it is too late? All matters in our health should be taken pro-actively, and may save you having hair replacement therapy later.
